Moving Forward
Founded in 1955, UWF became the sixth state university in the State University System of Florida. The University of West
Florida continues to expand with its most recent additions including the School of Science and Engineering Building (2010)
and the Presidents Hall (2012).
Ground Breaking
In 1965 Ground breaking for the University of West Florida took place.
In the same year the chambered nautilus was adopted as the official University of West Florida emblem. The first campus included seven
academic and administrative buildings, as well as 15 student residential buildings that housed 500 students. Since ground breaking the
number of students enrolled has increased to over 13,000 and its grounds to 90 buildings, including hundreds of departments from the Emerald
Coast to Pensacola campuses.
SSE- School of Science and Engineering
The School of Science and Engineering is the one of the major recent additions to UWF.
Opened in Spring 2010, the $30.6 million state-funded building is based on the principles of Project Kaleidoscope. It boasts a strong
understanding of undergraduate programs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. The four-story, 94,000-square-foot
building is energy and water efficient. It has even earned the U.S Green Building Cancel's LEED Gold Certification, UWF's first to do so.
